Default The EULA: Makes Me Wonder...

Howdy. This is a repost of the comment I made on hotmamamage's thread about the EVILs of Gold Selling. I would like to get as many opinions as I can on this sensitive topic. I also added a postscript at the end. Please don't flame or ban me for starting this thread. I just feel my humble opinion is as valid as the next person's.

Anyways, hear me out: Collateral Damage says that "Blizzard owns your account and anything in it." I'm bothered that all the hard work and long hours I put into leveling my character - not to mention farming all that gold on my own - still does not give me the right to do whatever I want to do with my account. I gave up a social life to get the most of what I pay to Blizzard each month. I died a thousand deaths (literally in the game) to get where I am. My toons have all the cool stuff that is the envy of my guildies. All the blood, sweat and tears invested in gaming -- and in spite of all that I don't have the right to all the aforementioned cool stuff?

This is really sad. I think Blizzard's rules regarding ownership are unfair. They are company rules but are they the law? Aren't they going too far? They collect 15 bucks from you and expect you to turn over the fruits of your Herculean labor over to them.

I'm suddenly reminded of that scene in the classic Looney Tunes cartoon showing Daffy Duck in Ali Baba's cave of treasures, stomping mercilessly on Bugs Bunny while shouting maniacally: "It's mine you understand? All mine!!! Down, down, down, mine, mine, mine!!! Mwahahahaha!!!!"

That's Blizz for you in a nutshell.

P.S. Can y'all HONESTLY say that you have never bought gold or even a WoW account, not even once, in your entire life? Just wondering.

Yes I most certainly can, simply because it's TOO EASY to make money on WoW.... Besides, it takes away from the experience. If you don't go work hard for all of that stuff, you don't have the same amount of respect for it when you get it. At least that's the way I feel about it.

Heya, Collateral Damage, how ya doing?

Thanks for the response. Though I wonder how it can be easy to make money on WoW -- grinding for gold was never easy (for me). I remember when I was a lowbie foraging for copper from the dead, I felt like the most miserable toon on the face of Azeroth. And as much as I wanted to play longer hours, I couldn't because of work. I was tempted so many times to buy gold to get better stuff, but paying the rent was more important. LOL. It took a very very long time for me to level my toon and acquire all the great gear, gold, etc. so yeah I'm mighty proud of my accomplishments in the game. And I think I'm entitled to the fruits of my labor but unfortunately Blizz's EULA states otherwise. I know I agreed to the EULA...half-heartedly though. If I didn't accept its terms, I wouldn't get to play. But as I got to play more and level up more , etc., it struck me that because I invested s much in my character, I think I'm entitled to do whatever I want to do with it.

Let's use the MS Office analogy. I pay Microsoft money so I can use the software. I write a great novel using Word. If Microsoft's EULA mimicked that of Blizzard, I wouldn't be able to sell my manuscript, because Microsoft owns the novel I wrote using their software.

What I'm trying to say is, whose effort was it to produce such a great novel...or in this case, such a great character?

As a player and paying customer, I feel invalidated by the EULA.

While I can respect your opinion, I think it merits pointing out here that no where in MS Office's EULA does it state any thing like the WoW EULA does. Blizzard is just protecting it's investment in the game, and all of it's components.

To be honest, this all spawned from Diablo I, where EVERYONE and their Uncle's cousin's brother's nephew knew how to dupe items... They'd dupe them, and then sell them or trade them to other players. basically, they were cheating the system, and getting profit out of it for nothing. Because Blizzard cannot know for certain who is and who isn't doing these things, they must put a clause such as the one being discussed here into the EULA, simply to protect themselves.

I know it's frustrating, but try to see it from their point of view... They are trying to keep people from getting jacked by some douche duper online. How would you feel if you traded that Legendary item that you got for some items that you didn't know at the time were duped? Two days later, when you boot up your character, you see that the items that you've traded for have been removed because of the fact that they were duped... See how this can get ugly fast?? It's a slippery slope that Blizzard is just trying not to sled down, pardon the pun.

Suffice it to say that Blizzard is the best game company on the planet right now for PC games, or at least one of the top 2. I'm glad that I found them, and you should be too!!! Be glad that they make anything for us!!!
